St. Anthony of Padua Parish was built in the early 1900’s by French Canadian immigrants that settled in New Bedford. Designed in a traditional Gothic style, this beautiful church is a testament to local heritage. One of the most interesting elements during our visit was the Edison-era power structure that is still present in the church and that still manages certain elements of the church’s power today.

“A church like St. Anthony’s has 4 stories of hard surfaces, so a lot of reflections and no where for the sound to go,” said Skip Welch, director of sales & business development at Danley Sound Labs. “The room has a long RT60 so we needed to take the loudspeakers to focus on the parishioners and work to not let the room take over.”

Kevin Shanley, owner of East West Associates, worked with Danley to select the SBH10 loudspeaker. The SBH10 loudspeaker uses Danley’s patented Paraline™ lens technology that allows for a wide throw but very little vertical throw. This allows the focus of the sound to focus only on those near the floor of the speaker and not up into the church’s rafters.

The SBH10 loudspeakers creates the wavefront of a 20 foot long horn and a ten degree vertical pattern. Doing so allows great pattern control with little interference that would contain artifacts that negatively impact speech intelligibility and phase.

The loudspeakers were hand-painted to match the church’s design so they didn’t detract from the church’s beautiful architecture and allows this historic church to maintain its history visually while providing modern audio technologies.
