East Carolina University was founded in 1907 in Greenville, North Carolina, as East Carolina Teachers Training School to address the need for qualified teachers in the region. Over time, it expanded its mission and academic offerings, becoming a major public research university and one of the largest institutions in the University of North Carolina system.
